In the 20th century, the world of Islamic education was still characterized by a dichotomous education system between religious education and general education. On the one hand, there are madrasas that teach religious education without teaching general
education, and on the other hand, there are general education institutions that do not teach religion. Islamic education at that time did not have a clear vision, mission and goals, especially when linked to societal development. Muslims are in decline due to traditional education. KH. Ahmad Dahlan is an Islamic education reformer from Java who is trying to include general education in the madrasa curriculum, and include religious education in general education institutions. Besides that, there is also another Islamic organization called Nahdatul Ulama (NU), an organization founded by KH. Hasyim Asyari. He developed Islamic religious education with an educational institution called Pesantren Tebu Ireng. This article examines the comparison of the thoughts of KH.Ahmad Dahlan and KH. Hasyim Asyari regarding Islamic education, especially aspects of objectives, methods, curriculum and materials for Islamic religious education.
